Book Review of Fast Like a Girl by Dr. Mindy Pelz

The most recent book on my health wish list was "Fast Like a Girl" by Dr. Mindy Pelz. Dr. Pelz is a Chiropractor, Author, and Speaker specializing in natural health and functional medicine. She has particular expertise in fasting, nutrition, metabolic, and hormonal health.


This book delved into many of the issues women face during their reproductive, pre-menopausal, and menopausal years. I felt a little left out because I am not remotely near any of those ages where these issues occur. Perhaps Dr. Pelz’s next book will be Fast Like an Old Lady! Ha! That’s what I need!😄


But she did mention some post-menopausal issues, so I wasn’t left out. But some of her advice works for everyone. She uses fasting as a quick way to reset your body and hormones to achieve optimal health.


There is a great forward by Lee Ann Rimes where she describes how she has suffered for many years with metabolic and hormonal problems and goes into how these things have been turned around, and her life has improved tremendously.

I have been skeptical about fasting for a long time. It’s almost like telling people you are on a keto diet, you just mention fasting, and all the naysayers, who think they are dieting experts, come out of the woodwork and tell you you are doing the wrong thing! What they don’t know is all the research that goes into a book like this and all the evidence that fasting can be a game-changing approach to try.


There are so many things fasting can help with. It’s not just about weight loss. But all kinds of healing happen when we are in a fasted state. Our cells go through all elimination and recycling of damaged cells, then cellular repair takes place, and we hopefully reach autophagy, which is, in basic terms, cellular housekeeping and you are left with good and repaired cells.

Fasting can help in resetting our gut and liver and all the hormones that regulate our bodily functions. It can help with female hormonal issues, reproduction, insulin resistance, and inflammation. So many things can benefit from fasting.


Dr. Pelz goes into all the different types of fasting from Intermittent Fasting to longer fasting and describes the different protocols needed for each type of fasting, how to choose which one will work best for what you want to achieve, for example, weight loss. She goes into detail on how to choose the proper length of a fast, what to do during the fast, and then how to break your fast the best foods to choose. She has even included some great recipes that will help you on your fasting journey.

I have been doing Intermittent fasting for a few years now and believe in the benefits. I’m currently experimenting with some longer fasts, so the jury is still out for me on my thoughts and results about that. But read this book for yourself, explore the different options for yourself, and unleash your body’s fasting powers!
