I discovered this book almost 30 years ago and used it to lose weight before a trip to Disney World. In addition to the weight loss it also helped me understand that the relationship between diet and the control of Type 2 diabetes is vital. For those with Type 2 diabetes, finding the right dietary strategy is a must! The Type 2 Diabetes Diet" by Calvin Ezrin fills an important gap for those who follow a keto diet and want to manage their diabetes.

Ezrin's book focuses on the ketogenic diet, offering benefits for both Type 2 diabetes management and weight control and maintaining the keto diet benefits. The diet recommends low-carbohydrate and low-calorie consumption and also focuses on the roll of fat. I think fat consumption is one of the most misunderstood parts of the ketogenic diet. So many people, including medical professionals have the misconception that we just can eat buckets of fat and still lose weight. This definitely is not the case, especially if the need for weight loss is there. Dr. Ezrin’s approach aims to reduce insulin production and use stored fat for energy. As he explains, "Proved to be remarkably effective for both Type II diabetics and nondiabetic people with chronic weight problems, the Insulin Control Diet--based on low-carbohydrate and low-caloric intake--allows patients to decrease insulin production and convert stored fat into fuel." (The Type II Diabetes Diet Book).

For those considering low carb diabetes type 2 management, This book positions itself within the keto diet community. It not only targets weight loss but also offers a way to manage and potentially reverse the effects of Type 2 diabetes.

However, in this diet review, there are potential risks associated with the ketogenic diet. in managing Type 2 diabetes, such as:

  • Unclear impact on chronic disease risk

  • Insufficient data on long-term safety

This low-carb diet plan for diabetes, the ketogenic diet requires significantly reducing carbohydrate intake, addressing whether diabetics can do keto through carbohydrate below 50 grams or lower per day.

Clinical studies have observed both short-term and long-term benefits of the ketogenic diet on Type 2 diabetes, including how it affects blood sugar and keto related outcomes. Short-term benefits include does keto lower a1c levels, improved HbA1c levels., reduced need for glucose-lowering medications, effectively answering does keto lower blood sugar, and improved insulin sensitivity. However, the long-term impact does need further documentation, but I have been following this diet for almost seven years, and it has saved my life, so I am very much a keto cheerleader! Gosh, I always wanted to be a cheerleader!

Questions are raised about its sustainability and safety over time. But there will be more and more studies coming out that I feel will support a ketogenuc diet approach.

While "The Type 2 Diabetes Diet" by Ezrin offers a promising approach for diabetes management and weight control, it is important to proceed with caution and embrace healthy lifestyle changes. Individuals should consider the latest research and their own health when deciding on this dietary approach. Most definitely consult a medical professional when making an6 significant dietary changes.

Understanding Type 2 Diabetes and the Keto Diet

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar (glucose). It's marked by insulin resistance, a crucial factor when considering diabetes and keto., with the body not using insulin effectively. This inefficiency leads to high blood sugar levels. Managing these levels is essential to avoid further health complications.

The ketogenic (keto) diet, a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, aims to induce ketosis, a metabolic state pivotal in managing insulin resistance. In this metabolic state, the body burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. This process can help in weight loss and may stabilize blood sugar levels. It offers potential benefits for those with type 2 diabetes.

"The Type II Diabetes Diet Book" by Dr. Calvin Ezrin introduces an Insulin Control Diet. This diet shares similarities with the ketogenic approach. It emphasizes low-carbohydrate intake to control insulin levels (The Type II Diabetes9 Diet Book, Goodreads). Lowering insulin production allows the body to use stored fat for energy. This can lead to weight loss and better blood sugar control.

However, there are crucial considerations for those with type 2 diabetes regarding the diet's fat content:

  • While the ketogenic diet is high in fats, it prioritizes healthy, unsaturated fats over saturated ones. This distinction is essential for addressing the higher risk of heart disease in those with diabetes and aligns with heart health recommendations.

  • Consuming balanced amounts of healthy fats may improve insulin sensitivity.

User feedback highlights significant weight loss and reduced cravings for sweets and unhealthy carbohydrates (Amazon Top Reviews). These benefits highlight the diet's potential to help manage weight and stabilize blood sugar levels, without causing feelings of deprivation or intense hunger.

Despite the keto diet's potential benefits for people with type 2 diabetes, caution is necessary. The book stresses the importance of consultingg healthcare providers. This ensures that the diet is tailored to individual needs, considering preferences for healthy fat consumption. This collaborative approach helps make dietary changes safe and effective for managing diabetes. It focuses on the benefits of low-carb intake while encouraging the consumption of unsaturated over saturated fats.
