I belong to a health book club, and every month, we read and discuss a different book. I thought maybe, from time to time, I might review a book I thought was particularly good. How does that sound? A recent book on stomach acid might have to wait a while because I didn’t get past Chapter One!😳

Last year, I read “Why We Get Sick” by Dr. Ben Bickman, and I actually did finish it! YAY me! 🎉It was so well written, easy to understand, and not too sciency. If the words start having 13 or more letters, I go comatose! 😲 I’m very much a right-brained kind of girl, and my brain can’t handle too much science! This book has a lot of science, but it is explained so well!

So I just can’t recommend this book more highly because I really did enjoy it and learned so much. It was mind-blowing and frightening all at the same time, but spoiler alert: Dr. Bickman has a plan to save us! 😊

This book is very relatable because it centers on a hormone we all face each and every day- INSULIN! But did I really know that much before this book? I don’t think so!🤷‍♀️

For a somewhat brief description, insulin is made by the pancreas, which regulates our blood glucose levels. Every time we eat, insulin is released, which takes the glucose from the blood and deposits it into the cells so that we can use it for energy. When we eat the wrong combination of foods, too much insulin is continually being released, and the cells stop responding, and this creates insulin resistance. I hope I got that right! 😀

A good percentage of the worldwide population has insulin resistance!

In his book, Dr. Bickman explains in depth what insulin resistance is, the causes of it (Take a big guess what that is!), and ultimately and thankfully, talks about solutions to it. Spoiler alert, we are doing the most important thing we can be doing to combat this by eating a ketogenic diet.

He goes into all the changes that need to be made like diet, exercise, sleep and lifestyle to name a few, because almost all chronic conditions have a root cause of insulin resistance. EVERYTHING is impacted by it, Alzheimer’s, Cancer, and our old friend, Diabetes to name just a few.

But I think everyone should read this book. If only to further cement in your mind that what you are doing, by eating Keto, is very much the right thing and it’s the primary way to fight insulin resistance.

If you read this book, I would love to know your thoughts on it! 😊
