Do you see where we are going here? It’s all about chips! 😀 Before Virta my snacks of choice were Doritos and Cheetos and I’ve been on a search to replace them ever since! I think these Hilo Life tortilla chips are very, very good! Not such great news on the Cheetos and I’ll talk about that in a minute. But when you get tired of pork rinds I think these are something great to try. I like to take a bag of some kind of chip to Mexican restaurants, and I live in Texas so Mexican food is up there in the hierarchy of restaurants that’s for sure. So I don’t want to go and watch everyone else have the salsa, queso, and guacamole! Oh no! I always bring my chips and these Hilo Life chips are great for that or for any time. I think the ingredients are good. I would give them an A- because of the sunflower oil and a tiny bit of potato starch, but other than that I think they’ve done a very good job, and at only 5 carbs for the whole bag! I have heard that Costco carries a giant bag for about $10, which is sometimes hard to find in stock, but I remember being so impressed that we were being trusted with a large bag of something. Everything is in little bags!
I have made both my tortilla chips AND Cheetos at home before and that was fun. Here is one of the recipes for Keto Doritos that I think turned out pretty well!
This is a photo of some fiery hot ones I made, but you don’t have to make them hot. 🌶️
Here’s the link for the Hilo Life chips on Amazon. 😊
Now to my beloved Cheetos that were killing me. My search for an acceptable Cheetos replacement has not been as successful. I have tried though, oh how I‘ve tried! I have even made my own and thought I might have posted them on virtaworks. I probably didn’t because they were just OK. As I recall they were made out of a whipped egg white-type mixture, piped onto a baking sheet and baked, and then dipped in cheese powder. Oh well, I tried. I also tried the two brands below. You might want to try them, I just can’t give them a thumbs up. The Hilo ones in particular taste like packing styrofoam peanuts to me! Not a pleasant experience.
But that’s the scoop on my never-ending snack hunt. I’ll keep you posted with any further chippy developments! 😀
