Move over lettuce wrapped burgers, onion wrapped is the new way in town! šŸ§… This is the viral burger that is all over Social Media and if you donā€™t have an In-N-Out in your town, you wonā€™t be left out now.

What is the Flying Dutchman?

At In-N-Out, the Flying Dutchman is a yummy simple double burger: two beef patties with two slices of melted cheese, no bun. You can also ask it to be mustard fried for even more flavor. this is a perfect keto version, but you can take it a step further and wrap the burger in grilled onion slices. I ask for no ā€œspreadā€ because it contains sugar, but this homemade recipe is all keto and you can have the sauce!

Here are the ingredients needed and how to make it.

Ingredients

For the Burger

  • 80/20 Ground Beef or Ground Chuck

  • Salt

  • Pepper

  • Garlic Powder

  • American Cheese

  • Large Yellow Onion

  • Olive Oil

For the Burger Sauce

  • Mayonaise

  • Sugarfree Ketchup

  • Yellow mustard

  • Relish

  • Worcestershire sauce

  • Stevia or any Low Carb Sweetener

  • Apple cider vinegar

Check out this video on how I basically made this amazing burger. See the recipe descriptions below for exactly what I did.

First Caramelize the Onion Slices

I used a large yellow onion and you want to cut the slices fairly thick so they stay together. I used a little olive oil, but avocado oil or even butter will work too. I seasoned the onion slices with salt and pepper.

Try not to flip the slices too much as this will keep the slices intact and prevent them falling apart. I started on medium high and then cut the heat down to medium low until the slices looked cooked and caramelized, flipping once.

For the Burger Sauce

Combine mayonnaise, relish, sugarfree ketchup, yellow mustard, stevia, apple cider vinegar and Worcestershire sauce.

Whisk all of the ingredients together and set aside. This sauce will be used for the burger and can be served on the side for dipping. Ā

Cooking the Burgers

I like to mix the seasonings in the meat, but some people sprinkle them on the outside of the patties, either works just as well.

Take the 80/20 ground beef and roll them into 3 oz balls. Use a burger smasher, bacon press, or even a pan to smash the balls down very flat. Add to a cast iron skillet or griddle in medium high eat to get a nice sear. Cook however you like the doneness of your burgers. Flip and then add the American cheese slices. Close with a lid fo4 a minute or two to melt the cheese. You can also use cheddar cheese slices if you prefer.

How to Assemble

To assemble each burger, stack two patties together on top of one yellow onion. Then add a spoonful of burger sauce and top with one more onion slice. This burger can get a little messy!

You can also wrap the bottom of each assembled burger with a little parchment paper like they do at in-n-out burger to keep things a little neater.

I served the burgers with the viral Keto Onion Ring Chips, so with the onion in both recipes you do need to be careful with the carbs.

Here is the link to the chips.
